PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION: This redistricting is in conjunction with an addition to Crestwood Middle School. Attendance boundaries will be adjusted between Ballenger Creek Middle School, Crestwood Middle School, Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School, Monocacy Middle School and West Frederick Middle School in order to balance enrollments due to the addition. Elementary schools included in this redistricting study are Ballenger Creek, Butterfly Ridge, Carroll Manor, Hillcrest, Lincoln, Monocacy, North Frederick, Orchard Grove, Parkway, Spring Ridge, Tuscarora, Waverley, Whittier, and Yellow Springs. High schools included in this study are Frederick, Governor Thomas Johnson, and Tuscarora. The elementary and high school boundaries will be adjusted as necessary to preserve feeder patterns.
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY: Construction of an addition to Crestwood Middle School will begin in spring of 2023 to increase its state-rated capacity (SRC) from 882 to 1,180 students. The addition will open and subsequent boundary changes will take effect in August 2024.
PROCESS STATEMENT: The redistricting study will be led by FCPS facilities planning staff and include Transportation, Fiscal Services, Curriculum, and Public Affairs staff, as well as school administration. FCPS staff will collect data and evaluate options. Staff will present options to the Superintendent and prepare the Superintendent’s recommendation. The Superintendent’s recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education of Frederick County (BOE) at a regularly scheduled Board meeting. A public hearing to accept comments will be held at the following regularly scheduled Board meeting. New attendance boundary maps will be prepared following final approval of revised attendance boundaries by the BOE.

PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION: October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) staff will ask the Board of Education to recognize and proclaim Dyslexia Awareness Month in FCPS.
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY: Dyslexia Awareness Month is designated by the International Dyslexia Association annually in October to raise awareness and understanding of dyslexia. School districts and other public entities across the nation issue proclamations for Dyslexia Awareness Month to encourage families, staff members, and young people, to identify, and talk about issues surrounding dyslexia. The overarching goal of the month is to continually raise awareness and ensure that every student can succeed academically.

PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION: Frederick County Public Schools Office of the Ombuds seeks approval to recognize National Ombuds Day with a proclamation.
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY: The Dispute Resolution section of the American Bar Association recognizes the second Thursday of October as Ombuds Day to highlight the Ombuds profession. Ombuds Day is an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of the Ombuds profession, highlight the value of Ombuds, and encourage the greater use of Ombuds programs and services. This year’s theme is Ombuds: Resilience, Respect, Resolve.
