PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) staff request that the Board of Education designate the month of April as School Library Media Month. Furthermore, we are requesting approval of a proclamation which will be read in celebration of School Library Media Month.
BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:
Officials from the American Association of School Librarians and local and national dignitaries recognized April as School Library month on April 1, 1985, with a ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol. Then Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan delivered the keynote address. Senator Moynihan told the school librarians in the audience, "I want to thank you for what you do. I hope you know how important your work is. You change lives for the better. You touch people while they can still be touched." The theme of the first national observance of School Library Month was "Where Learning Never Ends: The School Library Media Center."
In 2010, the name of the celebration was changed nationally to School Library Month after the Board of Directors voted to re-adopt the professional title “school librarian,” from the former school library media specialist.
Studies continue to show that schools staffed with a certified school librarian do in fact make a difference in a child’s life: Why school librarians matter: What years of research tell us
Schools in Frederick County celebrate this month in a variety of ways, most of which include reading, book fairs or a visit by an author.
