Proclaim the week of February 3 – 7, 2020 as National School Counseling Week in Frederick County Public Schools.

 

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY:

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated February 3 - 7, 2020.  Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is fortunate to employ 133 school counselors:43 high school, 38 middle school and 46 elementary school.  We also have school counselors at the Heather Ridge School, FCPS Virtual School, Career and Technology Center, the Success Program and 2 English Language Learning (EL) counselors. With the ultimate goal of removing barriers to learning, school counselors address the personal, social, emotional, academic and career needs of students.  Through collaboration with school staff, parents/guardians and community members, school counselors access and organize supports necessary for student success. 

 

The Frederick County Association of Counselor Development (FCACD) annually recognizes a Counselor of the Year at each academic level.  Janet Shipman will recognize the following school counselors for their support of students: Laren Anderson, Frederick High School; Ashley Frushour, Middletown Middle School; and Kathleen Klecan, Brunswick Elementary School.  Kathleen Klecan was recently named the 2020 Maryland School Counselor of the Year by the Maryland School Counseling Association (MSCA).  It is requested that Ms. Klecan be recognized by the Board of Education and presented with a Board pin.

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY: The Superintendent released her Superintendent’s Recommended Budget (SRB) on January 6, 2020.  The Board was briefed on her budget at the January 8, 2020 regular Board meeting.  The Board held a special work session with FCPS staff on January 15, 2020 to review individual department budgets.  At the January 22, 2020 meeting, the Board will decide if they will present the SRB at the public hearing or if any modifications will be made.

 

The Board’s public hearing on the proposed operating budget is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. in the central office board room.

Staff will present to the Board of Education of Frederick County (BOE) an update on student enrollment and projections. 

 

BACKGROUND/SUMMARY

The BOE requested that staff provide an update on the 2020 enrollment projections.  Staff will provide the process used to develop projections and the impacts across the district.  The September 30, 2020 enrollment report (see backup 1) shows the enrollment projections for the start of the next school year. Also attached is a Frederick County development pipeline map (see backup 2) that illustrates where planned development will occur in the county.
